Dave Brailsford has officially vacated his position as team principal of the Ineos Grenadiers, The Telegraph reported Saturday.

Brailsford will be appointed to the Manchester United board within weeks once Ineos owner Jim Ratcliffe's purchase of a 29% stake in Manchester United receives official regulatory approval.

Ratcliffe reached an agreement last month to purchase a minority stake in Manchester United, with Ineos Sports taking charge of the club's sports decisions. Brailsford is currently leading an audit of the club's operations.

According to the Telegraph, Brailsford announced his departure as team representative to the players and staff of Ineos Grenadiers at a training camp in Mallorca.

He has already been working away from the team's day-to-day operations since his appointment as Ineos sports director in December 2021, and is no longer listed as team representative on the Ineos Grenadiers website.

According to Cyclingnews, Brailsford will maintain his supervisory involvement with the cycling team through his role as Ineos' sports director.

Brailsford was the team principal of Team Sky, then founded in 2010, and the team won the Tour de France seven times in the eight years between 2012 and 2019, but the period of success was also marred by controversy.

In 2018, a special committee of the British Parliament accused Team Sky of "crossing an ethical line" by using a therapeutic use exemption, and in 2021, the team's former doctor, Richard Freeman, was accused of using testosterone gel, which was banned in 2011 for banned from British Anti-Doping after having his medical registration expunged by British Anti-Doping for having it delivered to the National Cycling Centre.

Brailsford denied any wrongdoing and gradually distanced himself from the day-to-day running of the team since Ineos became the title sponsor in the spring of 2019, but resisted repeated calls for his resignation.

At the end of 2021, Brailsford was appointed sporting director of Ineos, overseeing the company's operations in various sports, including a significant involvement at French soccer club OGC Nice.

Despite this new role, Brailsford retained his position as team principal at Ineos Grenadiers for the past two seasons, while Rod Ellingworth oversaw the day-to-day operations of the team under the title of deputy team principal.

Ellingworth resigned from his position at Ineos in November, and the following month the team announced changes to its management structure for 2024.

John Allert, formerly managing director, was appointed CEO of Ineos Grenadiers, reporting to Brailsford and Jean-Claude Blanc of Ineos Sports.
