Chloe Dygert did not make her planned trip to Australia to begin her 2024 campaign. According to her Canyon Slam affiliate, time trial world champion Chloe Dygert remained in the US to recover from a "minor injury."
The 27-year-old was initially on the start list for both the Santos Tour Down Under and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road women's World Tour opener. However, Daigert was not available for the three-day road race, which will be held from January 12-14.
"Chloe Dygert, who was originally scheduled to compete in the Santos Tour Down Under, will not join the team as she recovers from a minor injury," reads a press release issued by the team earlier this week.
A representative for Canyon-Slam confirmed to Australian Cycling News that Dygert was not traveling overseas for any early season races, but did not specify what injury kept her in the US.
For Dygert, who will compete on the track and road for Team USA at the Olympic Games in July, all roads lead to Paris in 2024; in 2016, she won a silver medal as part of Team Pursuit of the United States at the Rio Olympics. She holds a total of 11 world titles in track, the last of which was a gold medal in the individual pursuit in 2023.
After racing in Australia, the team's next competition will be the UAE Tour Women's on February 8-11, followed by a full slate of spring classics. If Dygert were to focus on track competitions, she might travel to Australia for the UCI Track Nations Cup in Adelaide on February 2, but not for a single day of racing.
Dygert was expected to make her second appearance in the Tour Down Under this week, but this is her only appearance in the race, having finished in the top 10 on three of the four stages in 2017 as a 20-year-old on the US Continental team. She followed that up with a ninth-place finish in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. This time she was supposed to wear the star-spangled jersey of the US Road Champions.
Canyon-SRAM, the first stage of the Tour Down Under, was lined with five riders who had just won the U23 national road race title in Bunyon, led by the Australian duo of Tiffany Cromwell and Neve Bradbury. They are joined by Alex Morais, Alice Towers, and Soraya Paladin.
Daigert finished the 2023 season strong, winning world titles in the ITT and individual pursuit and two U.S. road race championships, but a crash during team camp injured her left leg, which was badly injured at the 2020 Imola World Championships, and the season was postponed until May The season was postponed until May.
Over the last year, she suffered a series of health setbacks, including back problems, the Epstein-Barr virus, and surgery to treat her heart condition, tachycardia.
Cycling News contacted Canyon-SRAM about Dygert's recent injuries and how her 2024 season might unfold in the future.
