On Wednesday, cans of Red Bull energy drink were already visible at the Bora Hansgrohe team camp in Majorca. This indicates that this German team may soon get the financial wings to bring it up to the level of super teams such as UAE Team Emirates, Visma Lease-a-Bike, Lidl Trek, and Ineos Grenadiers.
Primoš Roglic is the leader of Bora-Hansgrohe and a true yellow jersey contender for 2024, but Red Bull's 51% ownership could transform the team's ambitions and have a major impact on the sport in general.
"It could be a strategic partnership to help us grow and achieve our goals," current team owner and manager Ralf Denk said in a video call with Cycling News and other media in Mallorca.
"Cycling has changed a lot in the last few years and Arab countries have become more influential. If you look at team budgets, the average is growing more and more every year. My goal is to run a really competitive team. The addition of Red Bull is going to be the next step for us."
Denk hinted that Red Bull's investment could be a game changer. However, he remains cautious as the deal is currently under scrutiny by Austrian anti-competitive authorities. Roglic filmed a commercial for Red Bull on Wednesday morning, but the deal has not yet been finalized.
"We need to watch the evolution of cycling. Certainly Red Bull has shown that it can make a difference in other sports, but it is too early to tell.
"We have to wait for the final decision of the Austrian government or the body that decides on the competition rules.
Denk is more in control of Bora-Hansgrohe's ambitions for 2024. On Wednesday, he commented confidently on his decision to serve as team leader for the Tour de France.
He will have the support of Jai Hindley, Alexandre Vlasov, and a strong team around him. Logrich is protected as the lone leader in July, although others have accepted the opportunity in the Giro d'Italia and WorldTour stage races.
"Primoš has won more or less every race, but he has missed out on a Tour victory and the yellow jersey. This is a big goal. We have to focus on that," Denk stated.
As sport director Rolf Aldag made clear earlier in the day, Denk acknowledged that Roglic wanted Bora-Hansgrohe to improve in many ways.
Roglich talked about simplifying some things in order to focus on what was important. Denk revealed details. [Primosz is a pure leader. He challenges us on details in ways we've never talked about before. I love that," Denk said.
"It's always good for riders to have input. I'm always open to improving the team if there is enough budget for it."
"Primosch keeps everyone moving forward. Everyone on the team is very happy so far. I think the motivation that he doesn't have a decade ahead of him is helping him."
"We talked for hours about details like when is the best time to do the Attitude Camp or how much time off we need before the next race. It's good to have these conversations, and I think that's key to moving the whole project forward."
Borla Hansgrohe's master plan for the 2024 Logrich race is modest, and he will not compete at all from Paris to Nice. That would give the riders who will have to work for him in the Tour de France a chance.
Roglic will compete in the Ituria-Basque and possibly the Ardennes Classics, then make an extended stay in the high country before the Criterium du Dauphiné. He and Beulah Hansgrohe hope to lay a solid foundation for a Tour de France challenge.
"We have a clear preparation plan," Denk said.
"Primosch doesn't race much before the Tour, so we're going to give the others, like Vlasov, Hindley, and Kemna, a chance to show something, and they'll all have their own goals.
"I think this is the right balance and after the Ardennes Classic we will clarify who is on the Tour team.
"For example, Martinez and Igita are the leaders of the Volta ao Algarve, while Zwiehoff and Buchmann are the UAE Tour. In Paris-Nice, Roglic and Vlasov are co-captains. Vlasov leads with Martinez in Catalunya and Romandie, while Roglic heads to Pais Vasco. Martinez and Kemna will lead in the Giro.
"It gives other riders a chance to be leaders. That means putting all our efforts into supporting Roglic at the Tour. That's the plan."
