Ilan Van Wilder dropped the bomb after winning Tre Valli Varesine and blamed the possibility of a merger/takeover of Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-QuickStep in a post-race interview, and he disagrees with all this shit
"I just wanted to make the tempo, then I had a gap and it was a good idea." I went full gas, my sports director Bramati said I finished
"I had a lot of mental strength from it, these were difficult weeks for us.
"This victory is for our staff and my teammates, and to show that we don't agree with all this shit, continue Soudal-QuickStep, I hope we will be strong enough and like this.""
Van Wilder's comments were the first time Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-QuickStep riders and staff spoke angrily against them. On Monday, Van Wilder's teammate Julian Arafillippe only described his grief at the complexity of the situation at the Coppa Bernocchi. As riders and staff continue to be in the dark about the future of the 2 teams, Van Wilder spoke his mind and vent his anger.
The 23-year-old won the biggest victory of his career in the Italian One-Day Classic.
"This is the least expected victory in my life. Today, I felt much better and finally, I feel good,"ヴァンワイルダーはに言ったCyclingPro.net After finishing.
"I think I picked a good moment. It wasn't actually my intention, but I looked back and had a gap.
Van Wilder agrees with his previous sentiments against the Soudal・Visma news, speaking on behalf of the entire Belgian team, saying that it is not simply "he" but "us" who opposes it.
"If you read the newspaper, it is not the best time for us as a team, it is not the best time for us." This win is really for my teammates and staff, and I have a lot of emotion in mind since last week to show that the Wolfpack never gives up and we don't agree with all this shit that's going on," Van Wilder said.
"I really took a lot of power from the last days and this really helped."
There are about 6 or so riders expected to come across from Soudal-QuickStep as part of the new 'mega-team', with most of the Jumbo-Visma riders under the 2024 contract likely to form the core and likely to increase frustration among young Belgians as the merger looks like a takeover.
Earlier today, UCI also warned both teams involved in or affected by mergers and acquisitions that they must comply with uci rules and regulations and respect existing agreements with riders and team staff.
