"It's not over yet" – Mark Cavendish joins race in 2024 to aim for Tour de France record

Mark Cavendish has chosen not to retire and will enter the race in 2024 and sign a new contract with Astana・Kazakhstan with the goal of winning the stage of the Tour de France.

Manxman had announced at the Giro d'Italia on May 5 that he would spend time on his hugely successful career this winter, but will return to the Peloton in 2024 for his 18th season, aiming for a record 35th victory of the Tour de France.

Cavendish needed time to recover from a complex fractured collarbone and decided his future, but will return to the race on next week's tour of Turkey, which will be held from 10-8-15.

"Not finished yet" Astana・Kazakhstan announced via social media that Cavendish and the Tour de France clips would be their will.

After that, Cavendish showed his support in a video posted on social media by the team on Wednesday morning. He confirmed his plans and said he liked to ride a bike after recovering from a broken collarbone supported by this year's tour, and said he made the decision after asking the kids what to do.

"I talked to the kids and I said, "Dad, what to do."They said, "Go on." It was a strange question. Another year, hi, which did not work out in places," Cavendish said, explaining how he came to make his decision on the race.

"Well, I think it was done this year. I have announced my retirement. I was looking forward to spending time with the kids, not being away from home, not having to get up and train in any weather conditions," Cavendish said

"In the end, I miss the race. I love racing but I was happy, I was in a happy place and I knew I could get out on top. Obviously, it crashed in the Tour de France, not the finish I wanted. But that's what it is.

"We have grown incredibly this year as Team Astana Qazaqstan and I felt a real family, so the first thing Vino told me when I crashed in France was, "Why don't you do another year?"

"No, no. Coming back even from this collarbone - coming back from another injury - was like another time. I was ready, I was in peace but the more I've been riding this summer I just love to ride my bike.

Cavendish joined the Kazakh team in 2023, winning the final stage of the Giro d'etalia in Rome and on tour aiming for a 35th victory.

Despite mechanical problems, Jasper Filipsen (Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin-Alpecin Things looked promising after finishing in 2nd place after Deceuninck, but crashed the next day and broke his collarbone, 8km away from the final stage 60.

Almost immediately after the abandonment of the tour, the story turned to Cavendish's future and whether he might change his mind in retirement. Astana boss Alexander Vinoklov said the next day the team will offer the opportunity to go again on May 7 next year.

"We want to continue with the mark in 2024 and race the 15th Tour de France to win that 35th stage," he told L'Equipe. We are ready to offer him that chance, but it is up to him to decide.

Alongside Cavendish's announcement, Vinokourov said Astana was "seriously reviewing the team, strengthening the direction of the sprint and changing personnel" and that "certain discussions are ongoing" beyond next season.

"It's no secret that winning the Tour de France and the stage was Mark's main goal. And on stage 7 he was very close to breaking his historical record. But the heavy crash after 1 day erased all the plans of both the rider and the team," said Vinokourov.

"I believe that a true champion should not end his career this way. So, I asked Mark if he regretted that he did not try again a few years later, and then suggested that he reconsider his decision, stay for another season and still try to win the stage at the Tour de France. It is not easy to reconsider the decision already made, but in the end Mark agrees and he will spend 2024 as a rider of the Astana・Kazakstan team

"Although Mark's arrival in the team this season was very unexpected, next year we will thoroughly prepare, seriously review the team, strengthen the direction of the sprint, Making personnel changes

"It will not be easy to make the records he shares with Eddy Merckx better. Some discussions are ongoing about plans for 2024 and beyond, and the team is interested in continuing cooperation with Mark. But, of course, first of all, our thoughts are about the next season.

Astana・Kazakhstan is preparing to support Cavendish in 2024. The team is busy in the transfer market, with Max Kanter arriving from Movistar and Davide Ballerini joining from Soudal-QuickStep.

Michael Mørkøv, a Danish veteran who is considered one of the top lead outs in the world, is also expected to move to the team after 6 years at QuickStep.

He told Ekstra Bladet in late May 9 that Astana "has a possibility." There is a good possibility. I can't answer because I haven't decided yet."
