Giulio Siccone crashed from Torre Valli Vallesine and landed at speed on his back and waist during a slow descent.
Ciccone was taken to hospital shortly after the crash, with a suspected fracture. But a medical update from the team, combined with concern and caution, provided some good news.
"Ciccone, accompanied by team doctor Gaetano Daniele, underwent a full・body CT scan but showed no evidence of fractures or other serious injuries," Lidl-Trek said.
"However, due to severe contusions, Giulio continues to experience severe pain in his pelvis and lower back. A further assessment of his condition and a decision on his participation in Il Lombardia will be made within the next few days.
Siccone made Il Lombardy the main end goal of the season. He finished in the 2020 race in 5th place and made 5 starts with a monument to his name.
The Italians have endured a difficult season after COVID-19 excluded him from the Giro d'Italia, but he was impressed by the Tour de France, making an attack on 5 stages and securing the famous polka dot jersey as the winner of the mountain competition.
He finished in 8th place at Giro delle Miglia last Saturday after joining the decisive front group.
The team will usually make the final reconnaissance ride of Il Lombardia climbs on Thursday, and Lidl-Trek may make a final decision on whether Ciccone can ride. The final team lineup must be registered on Friday afternoon.
2019 Il Lombardy winner Bauke Mollema will step up to lead Lidl・Trek in place of Juan Pedro López if Ciccone is not doing his best or can't race.
