Portuguese veteran racer Louis Costa has been linked to EF Education・EasyPost as his new team for 2024.Just as he ended one of the most successful seasons in years 1.
According to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, the former world champion and winner of this weekend's Japan Cup will sign the American World Tour team.
Costa turned 10 in early May at the age of 37, but remains competitive. He is racing for a single season with Intermarché-Circus-Wanty after 6 years of spells with Uae team Emirates, he was one of the last survivors from the team's previous incarnation as lampre.
The last few years have been a lean period for Costa, but in 2023 he has scored 5 wins throughout the season. These were his first victories since 2020 and the most wins for Costa since 2013, when he surpassed Alejandro Valverde and Joaquin Rodriguez in the Road World Championship title held in Florence, 1 year.
Costa's victory includes the Japan Cup and the entire Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, one of the Mallorca Challenge Races.1 But the real highlight is the Vuelta a España stage, his first victory at world tour level since the 2015 Critical du Dauphine stage, ahead of another great departure specialist, Germany's Renard Kamna (Bora Hansgrohe). I had a lot of work to do.
Costa told Cyclingnews in the past 2 Months that the lease of his new life at Intermarché came after feeling "limited" during his long stint with UAE team Emirates.
However, despite these results, Costa's failure to sign again with Intermarché-Circus-Wanty despite being 4th in Stradevianche and 5th in Grand Piedmont seems to have something to do with the squeeze on the 2024 budget. But now it looks like he's on the point of finding a new team next year.
