Carlos Rodriguez has signed a contract extension with the Ineos Grenadier that will keep him with the team until the end of the 2027 season.
The Spaniard was previously poised to leave Ineos with Movistar after signing a pre・contract with the team ahead of the Tour de France. Rodriguez won the stage on his debut tour and was ranked 5th overall, but Ineos redoubled his efforts to maintain his service beyond 2024.
Speaking with TVE during Vuelta a España, Movistar manager Eusebio Unzue acknowledged that Rodríguez's transfer was unlikely to pass, and a formal confirmation arrived in a statement by Ineos on Tuesday morning.
"We are excited that Carlos will be able to extend his contract as a Grenadier until 2027," said Ineos team manager Rod Ellingworth. "He has shown remarkable growth and dedication during his time with us and it's really rewarding to play a role in that.
Rodriguez joined Ineos directly from the junior ranks in 2020 and began showing off his abilities at the highest level in 2022, winning the stage of the Italia Basque Country and winning the Spanish National Title.
Later that year, Rodríguez made his grand tour debut at the Vuelta a España and finished the season in 7th overall and 5th at Il Lombardy.
Rodriguez's 2023 season was interrupted by a broken collarbone at Stradevianche, but the 22・year・old, who leads Ineos' overall challenge at the Tour de France, won the stage at Morzine, spending much of the race fighting for the podium and crashing on the penultimate day. Despite the fact that he was still in the top 5 overall, he was still in the top four.
"I've wanted to race in the Tour de France since I was a kid, but I watched the race on TV and looked up to Team Sky in the hope that one day I would be part of this team," Rodriguez said. "This year it was so special to race the tour for the first time with a team I always dreamed of being with," he said."
Ineos has been repeatedly linked with Remco Evenepoel's move over the past 12 months, but as things stand, Rodríguez appears to be in a leadership role again on next year's tour, with 2019 winner Egan Bernal struggling with a training crash at the beginning of 2022. I'm back even after the terrible injuries I suffered.
"I believe he will play an important role in the future of the team in the coming years," Ellingworth said. "He's really world class.
Rodriguez is the second contract extension announced by Ineos after the British team confirmed on Monday that Geraint Thomas will remain a rider for the next two seasons.
