Nairo Quintana will return to Propelton and join former team Movistar on a 1・year contract after a season-long suspension from the sport. The Colombians have not had a team since testing positive for Tramadol at the 2022 Tour de France, a substance banned by the UCI, but were not on the WADA banned list at the time.
The 33-year-old climber spent his last three years in the sport at Alcea Samsik, but the French team dropped him after his disqualification from the tour where he finished sixth, his best result on the Grand Tour since his time at Movistar.
Quintana's glorious year was the Spanish team where he won both the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España, with the famous battle Chris Froome in the Tour de France where he finished 2 times runner・up. It is a understandably meaningful return for the South American icon of the sport.
"It's very emotional for me to go home. It was a tough year. Sleepless nights, days of so many sacrifices, riding my bike, trying to keep pushing under the rain and scorching sun. But it was all worth it. We will not waste this opportunity," Quintana said in a press release.
"I know the values of the team, the values of the sport. I want to do everything right and help the team achieve the best results. I am so incredibly grateful to the Movistar team, Telefonica, the team and the whole team for this amazing opportunity that I have been waiting for for a long time.
"With all my heart and my feet, I will do my best to make them as well as the fans happy and proud. We hope that this era, which starts now, will become a truly successful era for the team.
Movistar announced Quintana's surprise return in a social media post, with the Colombian happily speaking through a montage of his best moments with the Spanish team.
He is the 8th signing of this transfer period for Movistar, after Javier Romo, Pelayo Sanchez, Carlos Canal, John Balenetoxia, Manlio Moro, Remi Cavanja and David Formolo have already been announced.
Quintana said in his Limbo era that his return would show a big victory for Latin America, he continued training in Europe through 2023, hoping that he would get a contract in 2024 in the cycling world.
His victory in the early 2010s saw Colombia win the first latte of Rigoberto Uran, Esteban Chavez, Fernando Gaviria, and of course the Tour de France
The World Anti・Doping Agency (WADA) plans to add Tramadol to the banned list. In addition, it is ready to implement the entire sports ban on narcotic analgesics during competitions. Quintana was the first cyclist to be penalized for tramadol after a blood spot sample taken from him during the 2022 Tour de France tested positive for the drug.
