Carlos Rodriguez proved his young talent by winning a stage and finishing fifth overall at the Tour de France in Paris, making the Grand Tour at just 22 years old.
Rodriguez was fourth overall and was scheduled to battle for the podium with former Ineos teammate Adam Yates on stage 20. However, Rodriguez suffered a major crash early in the stage, and his bad luck from the third week of the 2022 Vuelta a EspaƱa returned.
Rodriguez finished seventh overall in the 2022 Vuelta, despite a bandage on his arm from a crash on the stage to El Pional. In this Tour, Rodriguez, a member of the Ineos Grenadiers team, suffered a front tire explosion on the first descent of the final mountain stage, dropping him to seventh place overall. He suffered multiple cuts and bruises to his face and body and could barely speak at the finish. Rodriguez said, "Unfortunately, something happened to my front wheel on the first uphill descent and it broke a spoke."
." So I started shaking and I lost control of the bike on the curve."
After such a huge crash with only 30km to go, Rodriguez had to fight to stay in the top five in GC, not to fight for the podium.
He fell on the final climb and finished 52 seconds behind Simon Yates and 45 seconds behind Adam Yates. He said, "Especially (Omar) Freire and (Tom) Pidcock were great. But it wasn't enough."
"I'll try again next year and do better," Rodriguez concluded.
The question of where Rodriguez will race next year remains uncertain; rumors persist that he will move to Movistar for 2024, but Rodriguez has so far been very amicable, answering reporters who questioned him a few weeks ago:" Ask his agent."
No matter where he races, a fifth-place finish in his Tour debut and an impressive stage win in Morzine confirm that Rodriguez is a future Grand Tour contender.
