US Junior rider Magnus White was killed after being hit by a car during final preparations for the UCI Glasgow Road World Championships.
USA Cycling released a statement saying the fatal accident occurred near his home in Boulder on Sunday.
"It is with a very heavy heart that we share the news that 17-year-old Magnus White died in a training accident," USA Cycling said.
"On Sunday, July 30, we received word that Magnus White, a member of the national team, was hit by a car while cycling in his home town of Boulder, Colorado. White was concentrating on final preparations before leaving for Glasgow, Scotland to compete in the Junior Men's Mountain Bike Cross Country World Championships on August 10, 2023."
Boulder-based White won the 2021 Junior 17-18 Cyclocross National Championships, competed in the European cyclocross season with the USA Cycling National Team, and competed in the 2022 World Cyclocross Championships in Fayetteville, He was a versatile cyclist who then competed in the 2023 Cyclocross World Championships in Vogelheide as well.
A GoFundMe set up for White had already raised over $60,000 on Monday.
"White fell in love with cycling at an early age through Boulder Junior Cycling. He was a rising star on the off-road cycling scene, and his passion for cycling was evident through his races and camaraderie with teammates and the local community."
White has also made a foray into road racing, and was selected as one of 36 riders to represent the country in various mountain bike disciplines at the Glasgow World Championships, marking yet another step forward for the talented young rider.
USA Cycling offers its heartfelt condolences, adding: "We ride for Magnus, and we will ride for him.
The entire staff of Cycling News would also like to extend our deepest condolences to Magnus White's family, friends, teammates, and the Boulder community.
