Tour de Pollogne TV broadcast bike crashes into spectators, injuring 4

Four people, two adults and two children, were taken to the hospital after a serious accident on stage 5 of the Tour de Pollogne in which a TV station's motorcycle hit spectators along the roadside.

The accident occurred late in the stage from Puszczyna to Bielsko-Viara, on the final lap of the 7 km circuit.

"The motorcycle accident occurred on the last lap and involved four spectators, two adults and two children. None of them were seriously injured; three have already been released from the hospital and the last one will be checked overnight. The motorcycle driver and photographer, both from France and with years of experience in covering World Tour races, suffered minor injuries," read an official statement from race organizers posted on social media a few hours after the stage ended.

Race organizer Cheslav Lang provided some information about the accident, but no definitive report on how it happened has yet emerged.

Several people, including race leader Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), witnessed the crash, but no one was reportedly injured or affected. The crash caused confusion in the peloton, with some riders temporarily waving signs to halt or slow down the stage.

"I wanted to stop. My heart sank and I wasn't thinking about the sprint at all," Mohoric said in a team social post.

However, amidst the chaos, the stage continued. Then, about 600 meters from the line, a racing crash occurred, with about a dozen riders down in the middle of the pack.

"The situation wasn't too complicated until the crash with 4km to go. When the bike crashed, everyone was shaken up."

"Up until then I was super switched on and motivated, but I just didn't feel like racing and so did the other riders, so I almost wanted to stop racing.

"But on the last climb some teams were pushing. But I wasn't thinking about the sprint and I couldn't change my mind from what I saw. I hope everyone is ok."

Asked about the accident, Mohoric said, "I saw it with my own eyes. I don't want to comment, but I hope everyone is ok."

He added, "I don't want to comment, but I hope everyone is ok.

According to Lang, who came to the finish area to speak to the press about the accident, "It happened in front of the peloton. A TV bike went off the course and into the public." [Four spectators were taken to the hospital. But from what I just heard, I am not a doctor, but their lives are not in danger."

Lang said that a woman and a child were believed to have been injured, but could not confirm who the spectators were. He said, "I don't have exact information yet.

"From what the riders told me, the driver of the bike was very experienced and was trying to get ahead of the lead group, which was going very fast, and one of the wheels slipped. However, none of the riders fell over, only the civilians. I just hope everything will turn out all right."

The Tour de Pollogne will finish in Krakow on Friday.
