Track World Championships: Great Britain Eliminated in Men's Team Pursuit Qualifying

At the UCI Track World Championships Team Pursuit in Glasgow, Great Britain ended their title defense in the qualifying round when Charlie Tanfield crashed on the last lap.

After receiving treatment, Tanfield was able to walk off the course but was not fit to race.

"After his fall in the men's team pursuit qualifier this morning, Charlie Tanfield was immediately diagnosed by the on-site medical team and transported to the hospital for further treatment. [We wish Charlie a speedy recovery and look forward to having him back on the bike soon. Unfortunately, the men's Team Pursuit athletes will not be able to continue competing.

Tanfield joined Dan Biggum, Ethan Vernon, and Ollie Wood on the British team for the Unified Cycling World Championships in Glasgow. After Wood was shaken off, Tanfield, along with Biggum and Vernon, remained at the back of the British qualifying run, with the third finisher taking the time.

Tanfield crashed alone on the last lap, apparently injuring his left shoulder. The 26-year-old also fell at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where he was clipped by a Danish athlete in the first round of the team pursuit.

Great Britain won the world title last October, defeating the Italian team led by Filippo Ganna in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

Denmark set the fastest time in qualifying for the World Championships on Thursday, clocking 3:46.816 ahead of New Zealand, Italy, and Australia. The first round of the team pursuit will take place on Friday, with the final scheduled for Saturday evening.
