Remco Evenpoel, Wout Van Aert, and Jasper Philipsen will lead the Belgian men's team for the 2023 UCI Road World Championships in Glasgow, while Lotte Kopecky will lead the women's team in its quest for world titles on road and track.
Evenpoel will defend the rainbow jersey he won in Australia last September and will also target the men's time trial with Van Aert.
Pro riders Tibau Nys and Alec Segert will lead the under-23 men's team, while Sanne Canto will be part of the women's team led by Kopecký.
The men's team also includes Tiesj Benoot, Nathan Van Hooydonck, Jasper Stuyven, Yves Lampaert, Frederik Frison, and Victor Campenaerts in supporting roles.
"With three leaders, we can race both offensively and defensively in Glasgow," men's national coach Sven Van Hooydonckhout told Sporza when he announced the nine players. [Lemko is] difficult to control and Wout's role will depend a lot on his rivals. If it comes down to a sprint race, Jasper, who can suffer during the race, will have a chance. He will be disappointed if he cannot defend the world champion's jersey. But above all, we must not be disappointed with the way we race."
Vanhollenhout was no doubt referring to Philipsen's comments during the first week of the Tour de France when he said he would not race with Alpecin Deceuninck's teammate and national team rival Mathieu van der Pol, who leads the Dutch team. He was referring to.
"That was not an appropriate comment," Vanthourenhout said, acknowledging that the rider now wearing the Tour de France green jersey had apologized to his Belgian teammate.
"I think after the Tour he will think differently.
Vanthourenhout warned of complacency on the testing Glasgow city circuit and internal conflict if the race ends in a sprint finish.
"As the sprint approaches, fairness will be the deciding factor. Wout and Jasper will not be sprinting together.
"After a tough race, priority will be given to the rider still feeling the best.
The Belgian women's team has made no secret of its plans to help Kopecký in her bid for the world title after a great spring campaign and victory at the Tour of Flanders.
"Plan A is clear. But you never know what will happen in a race, so there is a Plan B and a Plan C.
