Jayco-AlUla and Liv Racing-TeqFind will merge into one Women's World Team in 2024 and form a new development team that will be integrated under the GreenEDGE umbrella of the Australian team and operate alongside the combined top-level women's team.
The two Liv-sponsored Women's World Teams will be brought together for the stated purpose of creating an international development venue for cycling talent that will run alongside the Women's World Team, which is poised to become one of the best in the world.
"For us, this is a huge step forward and valuable for women riders," said Brent Copeland, general manager of Jayco Alula. For any rider, having a structured development pathway is not only an important part of a rider's career, but one that we feel is lacking, especially in the women's peloton."
"Unlike the men's peloton, there is currently no competitive under-23 category and the step up from junior to elite level is huge. We are passionate about this new mission and believe it will be very beneficial not only for the riders participating in the program, but also for the younger generations to come as they envision their career paths."
[8The Women's World Tour calendar has grown significantly over the past few seasons, along with the number of top teams and riders per team, but there are still few dedicated road races for the women's U23 category to help them on their path to the top level: the U23 European Championship road race exists, but the first women's jersey for this category was awarded at the 2022 Road World Championships, and what's more, it was awarded to the first finisher in a combined race with the elites, severely limiting the number of young athletes who can be selected first.
And while the Women's World Tour has grown to 15 teams in 2023, the disparity between the teams is significant, with SD Walks dominating the results and point tally, and all remaining teams except Riddle Trek and Canyon-SRAM (which launched a development team in 2022) Walks have less than half the ranking points.
A merger with a development team should help address both the strength of the WorldTour teams, currently ranked 15th by Jayco Alura and 17th by Liv Racing Techfind, and the development path that Liv has committed to a partnership through 2027. We are very pleased to further professionalize Liv Cycling and women's cycling," said Eric van den Boom, Liv Racing-Tecfind team owner and manager. Together, we have a long history of building a strong foundation for the sport. This is now in place with excellent training facilities, coaching, and an attractive racing program. At the stage we are at, I believe a different approach is needed to further the success of women's cycling and its reach." The absolute top is getting stronger and stronger, but for the younger generation it is sometimes difficult to overcome the steps to a higher World Tour level." The announcement did not discuss the planned development team for 2024 or the composition of the integrated women's world team, but Jayco-Alula currently includes Tenniel Campbell, Ingvild Gorsken, Georgie Howe, Amber Pate, Letizia Paternoster , Alyssa Polites, and Urschka Zigato have signed contracts for next season, while Liv Racing-Techfind has Spanish champion Mavi Garcia, Caroline Andersson, and Rachele Barbieri.
"We have been honored to sponsor Team Jayco Alura and Liv Racing-Techfind for the past few years. The merger of these two teams and the start of the Green Edge Cycling Development Team will further expand the potential for athletes to reach the top of the World Tour level and bring more women and girls into professional cycling," said Rib Cycling founder Bonnie Tu said.
