Movistar's difficult Tour de France continues into its third week, with the team announcing Tuesday morning that Matteo Jorgenson will abandon stage 16.
The team announced that Jorgenson would retire with a torn thigh muscle.
The 24-year-old Jorgenson, one of Movistar's most active breakaway riders in this year's Tour, was in 48th place overall; 2023 was his second Tour de France.
He was reeled in just before the finish by Mike Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) in an attack on the Puy de Dome on stage 9, and Ion Izazire (Cofidis) won the day's break to take third place on the transition stage to Belleville-en-Beaujolais.
Movistar now has only four riders after leader Enric Mas crashed on the first day with a fractured scapula, and Ruben Guerreiro and Antonio Pedro left injured on the crash-plagued stage 14.
"Unfortunately, we must inform you that Matteo Jorgenson will not be able to continue in the Tour de France and will not compete in Tuesday's time trial," Movistar said in a brief press release.
"The North American youngster has torn a muscle in his left thigh and is suffering from pain in his perineum. Both injuries require rest to fully heal.
All-rounder Alex Aramburu, former Giro d'Italia stage winner and fellow Basque Gorka Izagirre, Austrian national champion Gregor Mühlberger, and veteran Portuguese time trial specialist Nelson Oliveira are the four remaining Movistar riders for the final week of the 2023 Tour de France.
Jorgenson later said goodbye to the Tour on Twitter, saying that his injuries would have only worsened if he had continued racing.
"My Tour ends here. Yesterday's rest day ultrasound confirmed what I thought after I collapsed in the big crash on Sunday." The hamstring in my right leg has a tear similar to the one in my left leg from last year's Paris-Nice crash. It will only get worse in the race."[19
