Brown and Matthews Help Aussies Contend for Medals at Glasgow World Championships

After winning a medal at the 2022 World Championships in their hometown of Wollongong, Australia will again look to Grace Brown and Michael Matthews in the combined events at the Glasgow World Championships this August. [The two are the stars of the ARA Australia team's elite road race, with Brown also competing in the time trial; the 2022 silver medalist is also one of the favorites to win the time trial on August 10 and will make her debut on the 36.2km circuit. She will run with Georgina Howe, who will be making her debut on the 36.2km circuit.

Rohan Dennis, the 2018 and 2019 title holder, will take on the 47.8km time trial on Friday, August 11. The retired rider, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games last year and bronze at the Olympics the year before, will be joined by first-time entrant Jay Vine, who surprised with a powerful winning performance at the Australian Road Championships in January. [Matthews won a bronze medal in the Wollongong road race, his third podium finish in the men's elite road race. [Sprinters Caleb Yuan and Kayden Groves will have the biggest climbs early in the race and the finish will be a punchy, technical urban lap around the course. Also in the field are Luke Durbridge, Robert Stannard, Harry Sweeney, and Simon Clark in a possible breakaway, as well as Australian champion Luke Plapp.

The women's U23 and elite road races, which swap the usual order to conclude the road race, will take place on August 14 on a course with an elevation gain of 2,230 meters and 154.1 km. Alongside Brown, the road team includes the experienced and hard-working Lauretta Hanson and Sarah Roy, the climbing ability of 2018 silver medalist Amanda Spratt, the fast finish of Alexandra Manley, who is also on the track team, and debutant Ruby Roseman= Gannon is making a name for herself.

National champion Brody Chapman is another valuable all-rounder on the seven-person road race team. There are no U23 athletes on the elite/U23 women's combined race selection team.

Alastair McKellar, a two-time national title winner, will join Dylan Hopkins, Patrick Eddy, Brady Gilmore, and 18-year-old Hamish McKenzie, who won silver in the junior men's time trial at Wollongong last year, on the U23 named to the men's team.

This year's junior team, announced in May, includes Australian U19 road champions Felicity Wilson Haffenden and Oscar Chamberlain. Also on the team are Talia Appleton, Mackenzie Coupland, Joshua Cranage, Will Holmes, and Cohen Jessen. The junior team will also have a month-long training camp in Belgium before the Glasgow World Championships.
