Pero Bilbao was warned by the UCI Commission after punching a spectator on the Col de la Rose on stage 17 of the Tour de France.
The Bahrain Victorious rider was caught on camera punching a fan with his right hand as he raced with Chris Harper (Jayco Alura) and David Gaudou (Groupama-FDJ) to the top of the Tour's highest peak.
Just before Bilbao, Juan was riding alongside Harper. The breakaway trio was climbing the last 3km of the HC classics within the last 10km of the stage, and there was no room for the Basque riders to enter. As they tried to overtake Harper, he swept past Juan.
After the stage, Bilbao's actions were placed on the commissaires' decision list for the day and he was warned for "inappropriate behavior (towards spectators). Bilbao only received an "official notice" and was not fined or otherwise punished.
In the end, stage 10 winner Bilbao finished third behind Felix Gall (AG2R Citroen) and second-place finisher Simon Yates (Jayco Alura), who accelerated on the climb. With this result, he jumped up to 6th overall and was just one step behind Carlos Rodriguez in 4th place, who was 39 seconds behind.
Bilbao's move was not the only infraction of the day, as former rider-turned-French TV commentator Thomas Voeckler and his bike pilot were excluded from the stage 18 race after their bikes stalled on the climb.
The two motorcycles stalled on a sharp curve at the top of the climb, resulting in the race organizer's car stopping and blocking the path of Jonas Vingegaard and Wilco Kelderman.
The two were sanctioned for violations of regulations regarding "circulation of vehicles during the race" and "non-compliance with press specifications before the summit of the Col de la Rose," and in addition to a fine of CHF 500, they were forced to withdraw from the race for Thursday's 18th stage.
Other sanctions in the Alpine Queen stage include a CHF 500 fine for the director of EF Education-EasyPost, exclusion from stage 18 for team press Kier Place for "irregular refueling" by a team assistant standing too far in the middle of the road and a CHF 200 fine to Lawson Craddock of Jayco Alura for littering, and a CHF 200 fine to Vegard Stake Rengen and director Andrei Hauptmann of UAE Team Emirates for sticking to a bottle.
