Pirelli has announced a voluntary recall of its top-of-the-line P Zero Race TLR tires in sizes 28-622 (700c). Details of the recall are not available at this time, but according to Pirelli, "This recall is due to compatibility problems with some wheel rims and tires."
The recall appears to affect only tires produced during a specific time period. Specifically, the tires were produced between the 10th and 23rd weeks of 2023, or between March 6 and June 5, 2023.
Pirelli stated that the tire recall was announced to ensure maximum safety for its customers. The recall notice also states that the company is organizing a recall procedure for tires that are already in circulation and distributed through its existing distribution network. Owners of affected tires are encouraged to visit tireicycling.com for updates on the recall.
The Pirelli P Zero TLR is Pirelli's premium performance tubeless road tire that was introduced in 2021 and updated in March 2023. This 120TPI tire uses Pirelli Speedcore Technology, which is a mixture of Smart Evo tire compound and aramid strips. According to Pirelli, this produces a faster, less rigid tire.
Owners of the affected tires should check the table below for the tire ID on the sidewall. For more information on the recall, contact your dealer or Pirelli.
At this time, no further information is known other than that the recalled tires have some sort of tire/rim compatibility issue. Whether or not it is an issue related to the tire's compatibility with a particular brand of rim or width remains to be seen.
Some of the best tubeless tire models and tubeless/hookless wheel rims are not compatible with each other. Certain brands have published lists of tires that are compatible with their rims and do not recommend the use of tires not on the list. The ETRTO (European Tire and Rim Technology Organization) introduced changes to its guidance on compatible tires and rim widths earlier this year.
The recall currently applies only to the UK and Europe. Separate guidelines will be issued by the relevant authorities in Canada and the United States. We will update this article when we receive further information from Pirelli regarding the recall.
