Garmin's Edge 530 and Edge 830 cycle computers have been around since 2019, and following the release of the Edge 1040 and 1040 Solar cycling computers last year, updates to these two models have been expected for some time.
Today, details of the new Edge 840 leaked online, along with the price of the new 540 model, were discovered by a keen-eyed member of the Weight Weenies forum, and it appears that a new update is about to roll out in the very near future.
U.S.-based electronics retailer Adorama listed the Garmin Edge 840 and Solar versions on its retail list, but appears to have since removed them. Pricing for the Edge 540 and 540 Solar models was also disclosed.
The Edge 840 model was listed as retailing for $449.99/£367.04 and the 840 Solar model retailed for $549.99/£448.75.
It was also reported that the new 540 would be priced at $350 / £285.58 and the solar-charged version at $450 / £367.17.
Not much is known about the details and specs of the Edge 540, but the 840 model listing also includes some specs, which, given that the two units have historically shared a major feature set, gives some clues as to what to expect from the new model They provide.
The big story, as expected, is the addition of solar-powered technology, similar to that found in some of Garmin's watches and the Edge 1040 Solar.
This means that, assuming direct sunlight, the battery life is claimed to be 26-32 hours of normal use and 42-60 hours in battery-saver mode, with an additional 25 minutes per hour of charging time in battery-saver mode thanks to the solar charging feature. The current Edge 830 is listed as having 20 hours of battery life with GPS use.
The specs also suggest an update to Garmin's ClimbPro, which may run in a similar fashion to what we have seen from the Hammerhead Karoo 2, as it appears to be independent of pre-planned routes.
The new model also appears to benefit from multi-band GPS and the PowerGuide and Stamina features introduced in the Edge 1040 model.
We also expect connectivity and pairing capabilities with third-party apps to be at least the same as the current model.
There is no official word yet on a release date, but if retailers have enough details to list the product, we can assume a release date is forthcoming. Noteworthy.
