Continuing to build realism into indoor cycling, Wahoo today announced that one of its indoor cycling apps, Wahoo RGT, will now include steering.
This will not provide free-roaming Grand Theft Auto style maps, but will allow riders to move left or right to select their position on the road; according to Wahoo, riders can move into the middle of a large group to take advantage of drafts, avoid fellow or avoid fellow riders, or choose the best line in a corner, according to Wahoo.
The software can be controlled in multiple ways. First, Kickr Bike owners can use the thumb buttons already built into the hood of their smart bike. Second, the mobile RGT Remote app allows riders to move left or right by pressing the on-screen buttons. Third, the desktop RGT Game app provides similar functionality by pressing buttons on the keyboard. And finally, Wahoo also announced an accessory that will allow riders to use their cell phone's accelerometer.
Called the Kickr Steer, this accessory places the smartphone on a simple tray attached to the handlebars. The tray can be tilted by pushing paddles that stick out on either side.
The Kickr Steer itself has no electronics; the smartphone and its accelerometer provide the technology. However, the considered design allows for two paddles per side, which can be reached from both the hood and the drop, and their position can be adjusted. Additionally, the tray attaches to an out-front mount that also serves as a mount for the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt and Elemnt Roam bike computers.
Wahoo X, a subscription that gives access to both Wahoo's indoor cycling apps, Systm and RGT, remains unchanged in price despite the increased functionality. Priced at $14.99/month (UK pricing unknown), the annual subscription costs £135/$149.
Kickr Steer is priced at £89.99/$99.99. However, prior to launch, Wahoo X subscribers will be able to purchase it at half price, and it will continue to be available for £179.99/$199.99 with the Wahoo X annual membership fee.
