Tom Pidcock Misses Tuesday's X2O Trophy Herental Cyclocross After Weekend Crash

Following his crash at GP Sven Nys over the weekend, Tom Pidcock withdrew from the X2O Trofee in Herentals on Tuesday, leaving just one cyclocross race remaining this season.

Reigning world champion Tom Pidcock had a major crash on Sunday, flipping from first place to the trackside barrier on the last lap of the race. He restarted and finished third, and has since returned to training, but says he is not yet ready to race at Herental.

"I rode the bike after the crash, but I'm not ready to race today," Pidcock said in a statement released by his team, Ineos Grenadiers, on Twitter.

"We've had some good races during this festival. Now is a good time to draw a line in the sand and reset."

"I am very happy to be here.

The Sven Nys GP was Pidcock's 13th race of the season, and he has finished on the podium in nine of them. He also won the X2O Trophy at Kortrijk and the Superprestige at Boom.

But now he is set to race again at the UCI World Cup in Benidorm on January 22, where the "big three" of cyclocross will meet for the last time.

According to Het Nieuwsblad (opens in new tab), Pidcock's coach, Kurt Bogaerts, told Belga: "He's still a little bit injured. 'He is still suffering from a post-crash injury. Fortunately, the wound [on his shin] didn't need stitches."

"Under normal circumstances, a cross at the Benidorm remains on his schedule. It is a shame that Tom has to end his campaign this way. He has raced with good feeling recently and was able to duel with Van Art and Van der Pol.

Pidcock will soon head to Spain to join his Ineos Grenadiers teammates for a preseason training camp. The final cyclocross event of the season in Benidorm will follow, but as Bogarts confirmed over the weekend, he will not participate in the defense of his world title in Hoogerheide in early February.

"He's resting a bit now, and then Tom and the team will go to Mallorca for a training camp," Bogarts added.
