A recall notice was posted on Salsa Cycles' Instagram page a few hours ago. The affected products are carbon couchippers and cowbell bars, which are being voluntarily recalled. Whisky No. 9 12F and Whisky No. 9 24F carbon handlebars are also affected. [These handlebars are standard equipment on six complete Salsa models, including the Warroad, Warbird, and Cutthroat.
QPB, the parent company of Salsa Cycles, strictly defines the recall as voluntary, stating: "In response to reports of cracking/breakage in the area where the brake/shift lever is attached to these handlebars, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada have initiated a voluntary recall in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.
Importantly, however, as part of its remedial measures, the brand is advising riders to "immediately discontinue use of these handlebars and bicycles," similar to what Canyon did with Aeroad in 2021 following a similar handlebar failure .
Riders are then advised to take their handlebars and bicycles to their nearest Salsa dealer, where they can have replacement carbon handlebars or alternative aluminum options installed at no charge.
To determine if a Salsa handlebar is a qualifying product, riders are encouraged to check the product name printed on the non-drive side of the handlebar on the front next to the stem clamp. More information can be found at Salsa Cycles.
