Gravel World Series Announces Seven New Events Among 17 on 2023 Calendar

Seven new races have been added to the 2023 Trek UCI Gravel World Series, bringing the number of qualifying events for the UCI Gravel World Championships to 17 worldwide. Sixteen of these events will be held between April and September, while the October event in Australia will count as a qualifier for the following year's World Championships, as it will follow the 2023 Rainbow Stripes event.

Both the Gravel World Series and the Gravel World Championships are in their second year and will be held in Veneto, Italy on October 7-8, 2023. Organizers promise that the second edition of the World Championships will offer "more challenging courses."

Belgium will host the first UCI Gravel World Championships in 2024, with organizers announcing Flanders, the start in Halle, and the finale in Leuven.

Last October, Gianni Vermeersch (Belgium) won the elite men's race for the first time in a solo effort, while Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (France) won the elite women's sprint race.

Most of the first World Series races will be held in the spring, led by La Indomable, a 105-km race in Andalusia, southern Spain, on April 23.

The following weekends will be held in South Africa on April 29 and in the Netherlands on April 30. The Swartberg 100 in Prince Albert, South Africa, will feature a mix of long gravel and tarmac sections and climb the Swarthberg pass. The following day, the Gravelfonds Limburg offers a 125-km course across the Küttenberg to finish in Cauberg.

Two of the four races in May have new lineups: the Gravel Challenge Blaavands Huk on May 6 in Denmark, a flat 150 km The 3RIDES gravel race will be held on May 13 in Aachen, Germany. This new qualifier offers several circuits, including the Kio Equestrian Stadium near the city center.

On the same day as the 3RIDES Gravel, a second qualifier will be held in Nanup, Australia, for the return of Seven, while Gralloch in southern Scotland on May 20 will be the first race in the series in England. Held in Dumfries and Galloway, the race will feature a 2,000-meter elevation gain and 110 km of 90% gravel.

The Lancer Evo will return to Spain for a race on June 4 and the Wish One Gravel Race on June 18 in Milhaud, France, with the Blue Mountains Gravel Fondo on June 11 and two other gravel-focused events in North America that month. Two events highlighting gravel in North America will be held in the same month. The 125-km course from Thornbury, Ontario, will be the first Canadian event on the Gravel World Series calendar, and two weeks later, on June 24, Fayetteville, Arkansas, will host the Highlands Gravel Classic for the first time in two years.

The remainder of the 2023 qualifying schedule is a return: the Gravel One Fifty in the Netherlands on July 15, the Gravel Adventure in Poland on July 22, the Gravel Grit n Grind in Sweden on August 19, Houffa Gravel in Belgium on August 26, and La Monsterrato in Italy on September 2.

The top 25% of each age group will qualify for the UCI Gravel World Championships, the same process as the first year.
