Movistar's Matteo Jorgenson Says 2023 is "a pivotal year for me"

The 2022 season was another strong breakthrough year for Matteo Jorgenson, with podium finishes in both the Tour de la Provence and Paris-Nice. He also missed the podium twice in his debut Tour de France, a good season for the 23-year-old, but he was on the sidelines in the sweltering heat at the Tour de Langkawi in Malaysia, the last race of the year.

Jorgenson is entering his fourth season with Movistar, and while the second half of the season was focused on helping the team avoid relegation from the World Tour by helping others chase results, he is looking ahead to his own opportunities in 2023.

"It's going to be a pretty important year for me down the road," Jorgenson told Cycling News. 'It's a contract year and I think I'm finally at a point where I can be a leader in races and win races with confidence.'

"Next year, I'll see if I can break through and win races. ...... It will also be a really important year for me to see what I can do in this sport. So I'm looking forward to a big winter of training, preparation and refocusing."

The American rider from Idaho has been near the top of the results table for the past few seasons, finishing third in the final stage of the 2021 Tour de Pollogne and second in stage 7 of the Tour of Britain. 2022 will see him in both the Tour de la Provence and Paris-Nice stages. He finished third and twice fourth in the Tour de France.

Jorgenson says it was frustrating at the time to come so close to the podium and even win the biggest race on the calendar. He also supported Ivan Sosa in the Tour of Langkawi to close out the season, which may have worn him down for a while afterward, but he eagerly awaited the restart in July.

"I'd love to be in the Tour again," he said. I loved it. It was the highlight of my year and it felt special to be recognized as a true professional athlete. I wouldn't feel the same way going to any other race, so I'd love to go back to the Tour."

"Otherwise, I'd love to do Paris-Nice again and go for GC. I like that race and I want to keep trying to get my first professional win - that's my main goal."

As for what kind of racer Jorgensen hopes to develop into, this year's race may not have yielded a professional win, but it did help Jorgensen eliminate some options as to where he wants to head in the future.

"I don't think I'll ever go for GC in a Grand Tour. It would seem like torture to do so."

"But from what I've seen in the Tour, I think I could win a Grand Tour stage, and I think I'm good at it. I like it better that way."
