Lucinda Brand has broken the metacarpal of her right hand after falling while warming up for the next round of the Cyclocross World Cup in Tabor, Czech Republic.
Brand is scheduled to undergo surgery for the fracture on Monday at a hospital in Hellenthal, Belgium.
"Sad news. European Champion Lucinda Brand fell at the Tabor World Cup Recon earlier today. She has fractured her right metacarpal and her full recovery is undetermined," announced Baloise Trek Lions.
"Lucinda will undergo surgery on Monday at Dr. Thun Klaes in AZ Hellenthal.
The Bowers Trek Lions rider will be away from the start of the European cyclocross season while he recovers from his injury.
The cyclocross World Cup season opened in the U.S., with the first two rounds held in Waterloo on October 9, where Brand finished third, and in Fayetteville on October 16, where he finished second.
Femme van Empul (Pauwels Sauzen Bingor) won both rounds to lead the series.
Back on European soil, Brand was warming up before Sunday's race with a reconnaissance of the third round of the World Cup series on Saturday when he crashed while testing new driving lines at the circuit.
According to a report in Sporza (opens in new tab), Brand hit his hand on a pillar when he fell.
After the World Cup in Tabor, Brand was scheduled to compete in the fourth World Cup in Maasmechelen on October 30 and defend her title at the European cyclocross championships in Namur on November 5. It is unclear when she will be able to resume training and racing.
