According to a report in La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Ineos Grenadiers star Eoghan Bernal has opted to cancel part of his end-of-season event program due to routine knee surgery.
The 2019 Tour de France champion is currently on the comeback trail after a life-threatening training crash in Colombia this past January. Bernal resumed racing at the Tour of Denmark this summer and then raced the Tour of Deutschland, abandoning on the final stage of each event. His last race was last week at Coppa Sabatini, where he finished 28th.
Bernal was scheduled to compete in last weekend's Memorial Pantani, but cancelled due to bad weather and will head to next week's CRO race. The Ineos Grenadiers rider was then scheduled to finish the year at Il Lombardia on October 8.
However, Bernal's 2022 season is apparently over, as he has reportedly cancelled his participation in these races and will return to Colombia.
According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, the surgery is a routine one on the knee injured in the accident, known as joint cleaning. Joint cleaning is the removal and cleaning of loose debris and blood from the joint cavity.
Cyclingnews contacted Ineos Grenadiers for a response.
