Colima has unveiled its latest carbon wheelset, the Essencia 40. Colima claims that this wheelset is designed to eliminate the line between road and gravel, bridging Colima's high-end road racing models with the brand's gravel-specific wheelset, the G30.5. The Essencia 40 is a wheelset designed to be fast and light on the road while providing off-road stability and comfort.
The carbon fiber hand-built wheelset was developed over two years in various test terrains with gravel racers and World Tour professionals, according to the brand. [Designed and built at the Colima factory in France, the Essensia 40 is a tubeless, hookless, disc brake all-road wheelset. Each wheel features 40mm-deep carbon fiber rims, 24 spokes, and home mechanic-friendly external spoke nipples. Freehubs are available in Shimano HG, Sram XDR, and Campagnolo N3W.
With an inner rim width of 23 mm and an outer rim width of 28 mm, these wheels are designed to accommodate tires from 28 mm to 50 mm, allowing the rider to switch between road bike tires and wider gravel tires if the frame has clearance.
Like Colima's G30.5 gravel wheelset, the Essensia 40 uses hookless rims, which Colima claims will reduce the air pressure of tubeless tires and increase comfort when riding off-road. The wheel's maximum recommended inflation pressure is 68 psi with a 28mm road tire. the rim is a new all-road design with 3K carbon fiber and an internal aerospace foam core that Corima says absorbs vibration while increasing durability. it also features Corima's R2 spoke racing pattern The new design also features Corima's R2 spoke racing pattern, with two pairs of 24 J-bend spokes front and rear.
Corima has also designed a new hub for the Essensia 40. Featuring a new freehub, the French manufacturer claims that it is specifically designed to meet the demands of gravel riding and can handle higher torque loads. The freehub features the Star Ratchet Engagement System, with 36 teeth that engage at a 10-degree angle. The size is not yet known, but Colima also fitted the hub and freehub with oversized bearings, which it claims will help improve durability and longevity.
The new wheelsets are priced at 1,390 euros/$1,590 USD and will be available on September 22 from the Colima website and distributors worldwide.
