The 2023 Road World Championships in Scotland, befitting the sprinters and classics who will compete in the World Championships in Australia this year, will feature a final circuit and finish on the streets of the city center.
Glasgow and Scotland will host the first edition of the so-called "Super World Championships" or mega-event, which will bring together 13 cycling disciplines including track, mountain biking and road racing from August 3-13. [The women's elite road race will be held on August 13, while the men's road race will open on Sunday, August 6, just two weeks after the Tour de France ends in Paris.
The men's road race will start in Edinburgh and the women's road race in Loch Lomond, with a 14.4 km circuit around the city center, including short climbs, before finishing in central Glasgow.
The Glasgow circuit has 193 meters of climbing per lap, 30 meters less than the circuit held in Wollongong, Australia this year.
Matteo Trentin defeated Mathieu van der Pol and Wout van Aert to run away with the 2018 European road race title on a similar circuit. In the women's race, Marta Bastianelli beat Marianne Vos and Lisa Brenoer in a 20-man sprint.
Time trials are held on a circuit that starts and finishes in Stirling, north of Glasgow, while only the team relay time trial is held in Glasgow.
"The spectacular and challenging route will guarantee the show that the organizers had promised. The riders will have a clear vision of what awaits them in the battle for the rainbow jersey next year," said UCI President David Lapartiento.
The men's elite road race is 277 km and includes 3.167 m of climbing. Starting in the shadow of King Arthur's flag, the race passes through the old city of Edinburgh, near Edinburgh Castle, before crossing the Firth of Forth and following the Fife coastline to Glasgow.
From Edinburgh to Glasgow is about 80 km, with the rest of the 14.4 km circuit.
The women's and under-23 men's road races start in Loch Lomond, west of Glasgow. The women's race is 157 km with an elevation gain of 1,930 m. The under-23 men's race is 172 km with an elevation gain of 2,123 m. In addition, there will be one lap around central Glasgow.
The Glasgow circuit passes the Museum of Modern Art, Buchanan Street (the city's premier shopping street), and the University of Glasgow on Glasgow's western edge.
The junior road race will be held on the Glasgow circuit on Saturday, August 5. The junior boys will run 9 laps of 129 km and the junior girls will run 5 laps of 72 km.
