Dan Bigum, who challenged the UCI Hour Record on Friday, rode an unreleased version of Pinarello's "Bolide" time trial bike. But not only has the rear dropout been modified, the bike is loaded with aero tricks, including ultra-narrow non-driveside chainstays and ridges across the front of the seatpost and seat tube.
The British rider had a machine with very different specs than the previous one at the Tissot velodrome in Grenchen, Switzerland. He took on the new role of performance engineer for the Ineos team and got a new bike, Princeton Carbonworks wheels, a custom-fit BioRacer Katana speed suit, and a host of other sponsor equipment.
Bigum runs the time trial component company Watt Shop, but instead of using his own branded cockpit, he opted for one manufactured by Mosto, a Pinarello component subsidiary, custom molded by 3D printing and priced between 17,000 and 20, 000 EUR 17,000-20,000.
Designed to work in conjunction with Bolide, there is no doubt that when fitted to a Pinarello TT bike, it will be more aerodynamic than the Watt Shop's product.
However, Wattshop has made an appearance with their cranks. A Kuratas Aero crank and 64T chainring, paired with a 14T Kuratas sprocket in the rear. The two were linked by a low-friction Izumikai chain designed specifically for the Tokyo Olympics, and lubrication was provided by Muc-Off's Ludicros AF treatment.
BioRacer's speedo was white and pink, a nod to his nickname, "Pig." His helmet is Casc Mistral. At the Tour de France, the strange air spoiler on Ineos Grenadier's Casque helmet was nowhere to be seen.
On the Englishman's feet were Nimbl Expect shoes custom molded specifically for track cyclists, weighing less than 200 grams, with a perfectly smooth front face and costing €2,299.00. Additionally, the Bioracer Epic aero overshoes will cover it. Completing the spec list is a set of Continental GP5000 TT tires, rather than the more commonly favored Vittoria Pista Track tubulars.
Bigum completed 55.548 km, beating Victor Campanaerts' record of 55.089 km by 459 meters.
However, it is widely known that Biggham's challenge was merely a warm-up for further breakthroughs by the Ineos team. Italian time trial world champion Filippo Ganna has already announced that he will attempt the Hour Record, although the originally scheduled date has been postponed.
Bigum is working closely with Ganna toward that goal and is no doubt making his own preparations to inform and influence Ganna's challenge.
