Demi Vollaring (Team SD Works) was favored to win the Tour of Scandinavia, but crashed in the final of stage 4. Vollering and teammate Niamh Fischer-Black finished five minutes behind and were later treated.
Because the crash occurred just outside the 3km marker, the riders who fell were not informed of the time of the group they were in at that point. Vollering, Fischer-Black, and teammate Anna Shackley, as well as Arianna Fidanza (Team Bike Exchange-Jayco) and Justine Gecchiere (Planteur-Pras), crashed in the middle of the peloton after passing two roundabouts in quick succession. The team crashed in the middle of the
Shackley was the fastest back on his bike, finishing just 52 seconds behind stage winner Alex Manley (Team BikeExchange-Jayco). Fidanza was 2:02 behind and Gekier 2:15 behind, and Fidanza approached Manley in a post-race interview with a bloody elbow, congratulated his teammate on his stage win, and said he too was doing well. [However, Fischer-Black and Volering crossed the finish line five minutes after the winner and were treated by medical staff after the race. Fischer-Black was treated for a shoulder injury, while Vollering underwent concussion protocols. Team SD Works announced early Saturday morning that Fischer Black suffered a broken collarbone. Neither she nor Vollering will compete in stage 5.
Another GC contender also crashed in the finale. With 8km to go, Cecilie Uttrup-Ludwig (FDJ SUEZ Futuroscope) managed to brake in time to avoid crashing when six riders crashed in front of her. She then caught up with the peloton and rejoined the pack 6km before the finish line, eventually finishing in the same time as Manly. With Vollering's elimination, the Danish champion is now a strong contender for the Norefjell summit finish on stage 5.
