Mark Cavendish will compete in Six Day London this fall at Lee Valley VeloPark from October 22-27. Mark Cavendish has participated in this event twice before, in 2016 and 2017.

"I am incredibly excited to announce that I will once again be competing in the Finova Six Day London in October at the iconic velodrome," Cavendish said in a statement Wednesday.

"Six Day London is one of the UK's leading track cycling events and I know from previous experience how competitive the field will be. It is a great event for elite cyclists and gives us a new opportunity to prepare for 2020 with the best riders in the world on the most competitive stage."

Cavendish will share the top spot in the competition with Olympic omnium champion Elia Viviani, who announced her participation in London last week. Cavendish won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics behind Viviani.

The Italian, who is aiming to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will use London to prepare for the upcoming Track World Cup Minsk.

"I am delighted that Elia Viviani has been selected as a fellow Finova Six Day Londoner. He is a quality athlete and we have always enjoyed a healthy rivalry.

Cavendish has competed in Six Day London twice before, finishing second both times; in 2016 he partnered with Bradley Wiggins and finished second behind Moreno de Pauw and Kenny de Ketele. Twelve months later, Cavendish, along with fellow Manxman Pete Kennaugh, had to cede the best to Cameron Mayer and Callum Scottson.

Cavendish, whose contract with Dimension Data expires at the end of this season, has endured the disappointment of not yet recording a win on the road in 2019 and not being selected for the Tour de France The 34-year-old has spent the past few weeks competing in the Tour de Pologne and European Championships road races and will take part in the Deutschland Tour, which opens on Thursday.
