Davide Formolo Abandons Vuelta a España Due to Injury from a Group Crash on Stage 6 Italian champion Davide Formolo has abandoned the Vuelta a España after being injured in a group crash on stage 6.

The Italian champion was one of many riders to go down in a crash that occurred 90 km from the finish of Thursday's stage. His Bora-Hansgrohe team explained that he suffered a hard pelvic injury.

Although he re-entered the race, Formolo was visibly uncomfortable for the remainder of the stage. He spent much of the stage trying to get back to the team car, and although he rejoined the peloton on the final climb, he ultimately finished 13 minutes behind the GC main group.

"Davide was able to complete yesterday's stage after his crash, but was suffering from pain in his right side pelvis.

Formolo finished 12th overall, while teammate Rafau Mayka started the day in eighth place; the 26-year-old Formolo was in good form heading into the race after winning the Italian road race title and finishing seventh in the Tour de Pollogne.

The EF Education First duo of Rigoberto Urán and Hugh Kersee suffered a broken collarbone, CCC team member Victor de la Parte suffered multiple fractures, and former race leader Nicolas Roche received 12 stitches to his arm.

Despite losing Formolo, Beulah Hansgrohe recovered on Friday's stage 7, and Majoca, who finished fifth on the steep Alto Mas de la Costa, moved into fifth place overall.
