Mitchelton-Scott's Jack Hague moved another step closer to a big win this season with a third-place finish in the World Tour one-day race, the Bretagne Classic-Aust-France, on Sunday.

The Australian was overwhelmed by winners Sepp Vanmarcke (EF Education First) and Thijs Benoot of Lotto Soudal in the 284km race in Brittany, France, but was buoyed by the experience of being in the mix.

"I had a pretty good leg today and it was the type of race I enjoy. 'If I can run aggressive, I can run a better race. If you can be aggressive, it leads to better races. On these small, narrow roads, you need to attack and get in front.

The 25-year-old, who won his first Tour de Pollogne stage in his second year as a professional in 2017, is still looking for his second win of his professional career.

"The plan was that guys like me and Lucas Hamilton, guys who are not good at sprinting, were supposed to be aggressive," he continued.

"Unfortunately, Matteo [Trentin] got a flat tire in the gravel section. [The final was] a little tricky, but it was good that the three of us were able to get away. Unfortunately, in the last kilometer, Benoot got in front and Vanmarcke got away.

Haig has been with Mitchelton-Scott since turning pro in 2016 and enjoys the full support of his teammates and management team.

He has had a particularly successful season, finishing 7th overall at Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana in February, 6th overall at Ruta del Sol, and an impressive 4th overall at Paris-Nice in March, on his way to the Tour where he competed in support of Adam Yates He paved the way to the Tour, where he competed in support of Adam Yates.

"Jack had a great run," said Yates. He gave it his all. Of course he wanted to win, but he was with two riders who have won a lot of races. We were going to give everybody a chance today and he took it."
