Overhead footage of stage 8 of the Vuelta a España showed more than Nikias Arndt (Team Sunweb) winning a breakaway group in stormy Catalunya. According to The Guardian, the TV coverage led authorities to discover that illegal marijuana cultivation was taking place in the town of Igualada.
Officers in Mossos d'Esquadra were informed by social media that marijuana cultivation was taking place northwest of Barcelona.
"We received information through social media that there was a marijuana grow on the roof of an apartment building in Igualada," a spokesperson for Mossos d'Esquadra told The Guardian.
"We have launched an investigation, which is still ongoing, and have seized 40 marijuana plants. So far, no arrests have been made."
The rooftops of the apartments were not directly connected to any of the apartments, and investigators are trying to determine who was involved with the plants.
Last month, a raid on a farm in Alcuescar, Caceres, turned up 22,000 marijuana plants, 281 kg of buds, and growing equipment.
According to The Guardian, nine Albanians and one Spaniard were arrested.
In Spain, marijuana has been decriminalized for personal cultivation and use, but its sale and trade are illegal. Catalonia legalized cannabis clubs in 2017 with strict rules to reduce drug tourism. Club members can use, grow, and distribute cannabis with some restrictions, so the cannabis farms found in the video may be perfectly legal.
