Twelve days after his crash at the Vuelta a España, Rigoberto Urán (EF Education First) reported his condition from his hospital bed. Uran is in a hospital in Barcelona after suffering multiple injuries in a group crash on stage 6.

Uran suffered a fractured shoulder blade, broken ribs, a punctured left lung, and a fractured left clavicle, and recently underwent seven hours of surgery and stated that he was "lucky to be alive." The lung injury delayed his shoulder surgery and forced him to be hospitalized.

A mid-stage crash also left Nicolas Roche (Team Sunweb), Victor de la Parte (CCC Team), and teammate Hugh Kersee out of the race.

"Guys, life and bikes have hit me hard, but nothing like this weekend," Uran posted on Instagram.

"After 7 hours of surgery the doctors told my family the puzzle was complete.

"My collarbone, shoulder blade, ribs, and vertebrae are fine and my lungs are getting better. Now I just need patience to get out of here and recover."

This is not the first time the 32-year-old has been hospitalized this season; he crashed during a crosswind during the second stage of Paris-Nice and underwent surgery for a fractured left collarbone.

"It's been a difficult year," he said. According to the doctors, I'm lucky to be alive."

Uran finished seventh in the Tour de France and sixth overall in the Vuelta, but plans to return to racing next season.
