Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team) will return to competition this weekend at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec on Friday and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal on Sunday in Canada.
Van Avermaet did not race for the last time in the Bretagne Classics on September 1 after several weeks of rest. He finished sixth in the French one-day race. The World Tour race in Canada before the UCI Road World Championships later this month will be his last.
"I always look forward to racing in Quebec and Montreal, as they are two of my biggest goals this season," Van Avermaert said in a statement released with the announcement of the CCC team roster.
"I felt good at the Bretagne Classic-Ouest France last week and I think the legs were better than the result. I've been training well with the World Championships in Yorkshire as my motivation.
Van Avermaat will be in Canada with teammates Josef Cerny, Simon Geschke, Serge Pauwels, Michal Scheer, Joey Roskopf, and Ukasz Wisinowski.
"With top-10 finishes every time in Quebec, including five podiums, the Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec fits Greg's strengths," said team director Steve Bauer. But this year's Montreal course stretches nearly 220 kilometers, and two laps could increase fatigue in the peloton, which could work to Greg's advantage."
Juan Avermart said that the harder the race is, the better it will be for his next victory and for his preparation for Yorkshire.
"Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec and Montreal are tough races, which suits my style as I like to sprint, especially at the end of long, hard races. I think it will give me a good idea of how everyone is racing before the World Championships and what I need to do to fine-tune my form in the next few weeks."
Bauer said the team's cooperation is essential for Van Avermaert to reach the podium on the punchy and challenging course.
"Even with a pre-race favorite in Greg, the team needs to be on their A-game," he said. Both races are difficult to control and the punchy profiles could work to the advantage of a small group of strong riders to clear." The riders are healthy, ready and motivated to get Greg back on the podium for the fourth year in a row."
