Lotto Soudal performance manager Kevin de Weer has been reinstated to the Belgian team after his temporary suspension was lifted; the 37-year-old was suspended for an alcohol-related incident the day before the start of the Vuelta a España.
Team CEO John Lelangue confirmed the situation to Het Newsblad after a dinner meeting and reinstated de Weer. Kevin is with us," he said."
De Weer, along with Victor Kampenaerts and Brent Van Moor, who will compete in the time trial, U23 road race, and U23 time trial respectively, will head to Yorkshire on Monday for a training camp before the World Championships.
Before joining Lotto Soudal at the start of 2019, de Waal worked as a coach for the Belgian Cycling Federation, but resigned from that position after last year's World Championships in Austria.
"Viktor will be our rider until the end of December and Brent will be with us next year," Lelangue said. So we want them to be well prepared."
"Kevin has already achieved results with his approach in the past and will continue to do so with us."
De Weer was suspended until September 15, but during his suspension he was looking for employment elsewhere, including Deceuninck-Quickstep Despite rumors, he has clearly gained Lerangue's trust. Early in the season, he and Campenaerts broke the hour record in Mexico.
De Waal has also worked for Directeur Sportif in recent months, but following an alcohol-related incident at the Vuelta a España, he will now focus on performance.
"It is in this role [performance manager] that he has achieved results for us. And we are confident that he will bring us further results."
"When it became clear that he was suspended, I said I would stay in touch with him. We have spoken several times over the past few weeks. Kevin assured me that such an incident would not happen again in the future."
Lerangue did not mention whether the team had mandated that de Weerdt receive any treatment for his problems, saying only, "That's between me and Kevin."
