Dimension Data's Steve Cummings crashed with about 50km remaining in the fifth stage of the Tour of Britain on Wednesday. His team later issued a medical update in which they stated that the British rider "suffered a broken bone" as a result of the fall.
He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he spent the night, but the exact location of the fracture has not yet been disclosed. The team stated that "updates on his condition will be provided shortly."
Cummings, from Wirral, became a local favorite on the stage that started and finished in Birkenhead, and was cheered on by fans throughout the day on the 174km route.
"It was really nice to see everyone today. I know every road and the support from the team and me was amazing."
Cummings also commented on his injury, "Thanks to everyone who sent me messages of support, I really appreciate it.
The day before his crash, Cummings told Cycling News that his contract with Dimension Data expires at the end of this year and that he hopes to continue in the sport for one more season.
"I haven't talked to the team yet, I haven't been approached. I'm not worried because I've always done my best and I'm just looking forward." I haven't been performing to my maximum for a while.
"If this is my last year, I'm happy with that too. It could be my last in this race, it could be my last in all of the next races."
Depending on the extent of his injuries, the crash could jeopardize his participation in races this season.
