Belgium has announced the final registered members for the UCI World Championships in Yorkshire. Philippe Gilbert (Deceuninck-QuickStep), Greg Van Avermaat (CCC Team), and 19-year-old Remco Evenpole are the leading candidates for the elite men's time trial and possibly the elite men's road race on September 29. He is also an outsider. [Gilbert has two wins at the Vuelta a España, Van Avermaet won the Montreal GP, and Evenpoel has a European time trial title and a win at last month's Clasica San Sebastián.
The leading trio will be supported by Milan-San Remo 2nd place finisher Oliver Naessen, Paris-Roubaix podium finisher Yves Lampert, and Tour and Vuelta stage winner Dylan Tuns. Montrail 4th Tim Wellens and Quick Step mainstay Tim Declercq round out the lineup.
There are no surprises in the eight-man team, but Jasper Steiven (Trek-Segafredo) may be a disappointment after a strong August and September. He is on the reserve list along with Laurens de Plas (Jumbo Visma), Laurens de Vries (Astana), and Sepp Vanmarcke (EF Education First).
Van Avermaet is perhaps best suited to this course, which could mitigate the group sprints in Harrogate.
The 34-year-old did not have the best early 2019, winning stages at the Vuelta a Valenciana and Tour de Yorkshire but missing out on a win at the Tour de France. However, he showed he was ready for Yorkshire with a third-place finish at GP Quebec and a win in Montreal.
Gilbert is one of the favorites to win the Rainbow Jersey, and the 37-year-old from Lotto Soudal will be looking to repeat his success at the 2012 Worlds.
Evenpoel will be taking on the senior world championships for the first time, skipping the under-23 category after winning the junior road race and time trial titles in Innsbruck last year. In the men's time trial, she will be paired with Hour record holder Victor Kampenaerts (Lotto-Soudal).
The women's road race lineup will consist of Julie Vande Velde and Kelly van den Steen of Lotto Soudal, and Valerie Demy (CCC-Liv) and Sophie de Vuyst (Parkhotel Valkenburg). in April. De Vuyst, who won the Brabantse Pijl, will lead the race and will also compete in the time trial.
In the under-23 category, the UAE Team Emirates sprinter Yasper Filipsen and Ilan Van Wilder, third in the Tour de L'Avenir, will be the favorites.
