Despite the fatigue of winning the Vuelta a España, Primoš Roglic will compete in the team time trial mixed relay, elite men's individual time trial, and elite men's road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire, where the Slovenian cycling community will look to continue its highly successful 2019 season.
Roglič was confirmed on Tuesday with an eight-man elite men's team, with Tadej Pogačar and Matej Mohorič also strong team leaders. Making up the team are Jan Tratnik, Luka Pibernik, Grega Bole, Jan Poranci, and David Per. Luka Medjeck will miss the race after crashing at the Vuelta and breaking his hip.
Several leading countries have forsaken the new mixed relay event, saving their best time trialists for the individual time trial. However, Slovenia chose Roglič, Pogačar, and Tratnik for the men's trio. The women's trio was Eugenia Bujak, Urša Pintar, and Urška Blavec.
The Team Time Trial Mixed Relay will be held for the first time at the World Championship level as the UCI looks to breathe new life into the World Championships.
This unusual format was announced last year after controversy over the trade team TTT and was tried out at the European Championships earlier this year.
Men and women still race separately, but on the same team [country] in the same race, with three men "tagging in" three women after one lap of the course.
The route for the first World Championships Mixed Relay is based on the 14 km Harrogate circuit used in road racing, with each country having the men's trio do one lap before the women do a second lap. At the European Championships, the Netherlands won the race hands down.
Roglic will travel to Yorkshire this weekend to prepare for the three races at the World Championships. With time trial specialists Chris Froome and Tom Dumoulin sidelined and Rohan Dennis out for the season, Roglic has a chance to win the world title.
He won the silver medal at the 2017 Time Trial World Championships in Bergen, Norway. Tom Dumoulin won the gold medal by 57 seconds, but Roglic excelled in the uphill finish, beating Chris Froome to third place.
