Detunink Quickstep signs Yannick Steimle

Deceuninck-QuickStep has signed its eighth signing for 2020, signing German flagman Yannick Steimle to a two-year contract.

The 23-year-old has been with the team since the beginning of August and confirmed his potential by winning the Textielprijs Vichte kermesse in Belgium on Tuesday. Earlier in the season, Steimle was with Vorarlberg Santik, winning six races, including two stages of the Tour of Austria and the overall win at the Tour of Upper Austria in June.

"It's an incredible feeling. My childhood dream has come true!" Steimle said in a team press release. When Patrick [Lefebvre] offered me a contract, I was really crazy to sign with Dečuninck-Quickstep."

"I'm really happy to have this opportunity and now I can show the team and the cycling world what I can do. I can't wait to see what this new path in life brings me, but I love the classics and hard one-day races.

"Just wearing this jersey motivates me to give it my all and get the best result! I wanted to win today, so I attacked on the first lap."

"Frankly, everything that happened today was incredible."

Steimle joined Dečuninck-Quick Step after spending four years at the continental level, two each at Felbmayr Simplon and Vorarlberg Santik. Last year, he won mountain prizes at the Flèche du Sud, Kreuz-Bleisch-Elite, and Tour of South Bohemia, as well as making his world championship debut.

As well as several Kermes, he also competed in the Brussels Cycling Tour from Quick Step, finishing in 20th place. His next race is Friday's Campioenschap van Vlaanderen, which the team won with Fernando Gaviria in 2017.

"Janik's signing is very special for us," Lefebvre said. We have a good track record of developing young talent and it didn't take us long to decide we wanted him to stay with us."

"Not only is he a strong rider, but we have already seen how willing he is to learn and work with the more experienced riders around him. Importantly, he has the personality to fit in with the group and wants to be part of the team.

Steimle, along with Andrea Bajori and Mauri Vansevenan, will turn professional for the Belgian team next season. Bert van Lergerghe (Cofidis), Stein Steels (Roompot-Charles), Mattia Cattaneo (Androni Giocattoli-Seidelmec), Davide Ballerini (Astana), and João Almeida (Hagens Berman Axion). Contracts have also been finalized.

The team renewed the contracts of Julian Alaphilippe, Zdenek Stival, James Knox, Iljo Keisse, Pieter Serry, and Remco Evenepoel; Elia Viviani, Enric Mas, Philippe Gilbert, Fabio Sabatini, Maximiliano Richese, and Davide Martinelli will leave at the end of the season.
