Tour de France (open in new tab) runner-up Geraint Thomas (open in new tab) has decided to compete in both the elite men's individual time trial and road race at the UCI Road World Championships (open in new tab) in Yorkshire, British Cycling announced.
The final road race squad includes South Yorkshiremen Ben Swift, Adam Yates, Owain Doull, Tao Geoghegan Hart, and Ian Stannard, with Alex Dowsett joining Thomas in the time trial. Swift will be the team's protected rider and will be aiming for a medal in the sprint.
British Cycling men's road coach Matt Brammeier had the difficult task of narrowing the field to just six riders for the road race after Great Britain dropped out of the top 10 ranked teams and failed to qualify for the eight-man field. He did not select talents such as two-time Tour de France stage winner Simon Yates, Luke Rowe, Hugh Carthy, and Chris Lawless.
"There are so many elite male road riders in this country that it makes the final selection very difficult.
Thomas had just returned from Canada, where he competed in the Grand Prix of Quebec and Montreal, but failed to make his mark. He expressed doubts about competing in the time trial at the World Championships, but was a finalist.
"Looking at the time trial, this year we selected two very experienced time trial riders, G and Alex.
"G will also be competing in the road race on Sunday and will no doubt be a valuable asset to the team on the final lap. National Champion Ben Swift has really stepped up his game this year and is back to his best since his injury.
"I know he can't wait to race in front of his home crowd and I think the whole team will be energized by this kind of support. Tao and Owain joined us from the Vuelta and have impressed as relatively young riders in the professional peloton. [Adam Yates has had some great results this season, both in one-day races and in stage races.
"Having just finished the Tour of Britain with the Great Britain Cycling Team, I was again surprised by the level of support I receive on the road.
For the men's team, Lizzie Deignan led the elite women's team and Tom Pidcock was named to the under-23 men's team despite his terrible crash at the Tour de Lavenir.
