Geraint Thomas Abandons World Championship Time Trial

Geraint Thomas (opens in new tab) (GBR) has withdrawn from the UCI Road World Championships (opens in new tab) time trial.

The Welshman, who finished second in the Tour de France, said earlier in the week that he had decided to compete in the time trial and road race, but that conditions were not optimal for him to compete in the time trial.

"I have tried to get back into shape after my post-Tour rest, but unfortunately I am not in good enough shape to perform at my best," Thomas said in a statement from British Cycling.

"So, together with my coach at British Cycling and Matt Brammeier (team coach), we decided to skip the TT and commit to the team for the road race."

This decision put an end to the "do or don't" question surrounding Thomas' participation in the race, as the 32-year-old decided not to compete until after the World Tour race in Canada.

After running the Deutschland Tour, Thomas headed to Canada for the World Championships.

The 28-year-old finished second to Alex Dorsett in the time trial at the British Championships in June. Archibald is already on the mixed relay team and will compete in the time trial with Dowsett.

"John Archibald is ready to run the time trial in place of Geraint and is in excellent form in preparation for the team time trial mixed relay.

"He is having a good season, finishing second in the elite men's time trial at the British National Road Championships.
