Russia's Aigle Galyeva won the rainbow jersey in the junior women's time trial at the 2019 UCI Road World Championships on Monday, despite riding off course. Galieva missed the final corner and went straight past the marshals.
"In that corner I was blinded and it felt like everything just disappeared. I don't know what happened."
Galeeva entered the junior women's 13.7km time trial in Harrogate as one of the favorites to win. She said she was ready to compete against Elinor Backstedt (GBR), Camila Alessio (ITA), and Shirin van Aanrooy (NL).
Galieva started the time trial in third from last, and she ran a powerful race, covering the distance in 22:16. However, she had an accident when she was blown up on the final corner following the uphill finishing straight.
Galieva continued straight on, not realizing that the marshals were trying to flag her in the right direction. When she realized she had missed the final corner, she quickly stopped, turned around, and turned right back onto the final straight.
She crossed the finish line with the fastest time, just three seconds ahead of the Dutchman Van Unrooy, but there were still two racers left at the finish. Alessio finished third with a slower time than Galheeva and van Unrooy.
All eyes were on local favorite Backstedt to see if she could follow up on the bronze medal she won in the junior time trial at last year's Innsbruck World Championships. The Englishman also suffered a minor mishap when he slid on a roundabout in the final round. Although he did not fall, he slowed down and lost precious seconds, finishing in the bronze medal by 10 seconds.
Sitting in the hot seat, Galieva was overwhelmed by her victory and thanked everyone who had supported her young cycling career.
"For me it's just a jersey. I'll take it off when I get to the hotel. Maybe it's not as important as what I had to do today [to win]. To win the title, I had to risk losing it," said Galieva, who said she made such a physical effort that she fainted on the final straight.
"I had a premonition this morning. The most important thing for me was to do well for those who believed in me, worked for me, and helped me a lot to win."
