Mitchelton Scott signs British rider Jess Roberts for 2020

Britain's Jess Roberts has signed with the Mitchelton Scott women's team for 2020, teaming up with Annemiek van Fruten and Amanda Spratt, it has been announced.

Roberts will join British Cycling's academy team, Team Breeze, for the 2019 season, stepping up to the top level of the sport with one of the most accomplished teams in the sport.

"I am really excited to be joining Mitchelton Scott and look forward to learning from some of the best riders in the world," Roberts said on the team's website.

"It's my first professional contract, so it's a big step up, but I feel it's the right team to help me grow for the future.

"Stepping up to the World Tour is really special for me. It feels unreal to know that I'm part of the World Tour and I'm really excited about what the future holds."

Roberts won the British Road Racing Women's Elite Championships in 2018 at just 19 years old. But she comes from a track background, winning this year's under-23 omnium at the European track championships in Ghent, Belgium.

On the road this season, Roberts won the final two stages of the Tour de Bretagne FĂ©minine in France.

"I've heard a lot of good things about Mitchelton Scott. They seem like a team with a nice, calm atmosphere where you can have fun as well as serious, hard bike racing,"

she continued.

"For me, moving to a bigger team and continuing to push myself is important for my development. I want to focus on the road in the future, so taking this step now will help me achieve my road goals," Roberts said.

"Every experience is new to me, but I always give 100% to help my teammates and I am always looking to learn new things. To be on the same team with a player like Annemiek van Fruten is really exciting for me.

Mitchelton-Scott sport director Martin Vestby revealed that the team is looking for pure sprinters.

"We had the option of choosing an already proven player or finding a new talent that we could develop with the team and build on over the next few years, and we chose the latter," Vestby said.

"Jess is a really interesting rider and has shown great potential in road racing this season.

"She comes from a track background and is hoping to compete in Tokyo [Olympics], so her program next year will depend a bit on that.
