Bargill extends contract with Arkea Samsic until the end of 2022.

Warren Barguil (open in new tab) has agreed to a contract extension with the team and will remain with Alcare Samsic (open in new tab) through the end of the 2022 season. The French champion finished 10th overall in this year's Tour de France. [Arkea Samsic manager Emmanuel Hubert said in a statement announcing the team, "He still had one year left on his contract with us, but both sides preferred to work and build together in the long term."

Barguil terminated his contract with Sunweb and came to Arkea Samsic (then Fortuno Samsic) before the 2018 season. The Breton had a stellar 2017 Tour with two stage wins and a mountains title, as well as a 10th place overall finish in Paris, but struggled to replicate that form in his first season with his new team.

After breaking his pelvis in the Volta a Catalunya in March, Barguil returned to win the French title at La Haye-Houassière. He later admitted that he considered quitting cycling, but inspired by the Mayo Tricolore, he consistently went on the offensive at the 2019 Tour.

"The first year was not easy. When I was racing abroad there was no media pressure, but I learned how to grow with the team," Barguil said.

Barguil, who was the Tour leader for Arkea Samsic in his first two seasons with the team, will need to work with Nairo Quintana, who will join from Movistar in 2020.

"We can count on two big leaders in the mountains," Hubert said, claiming that Barguil could be a future GC contender in the Grand Tours.

For his part, Barguil said he welcomed the acquisition of Quintana. Barguil said, "He is definitely an asset to the team and to me."

"He has already won two Grand Tours and knows how to prepare himself and how to take on a special race like the overall class. From this point of view, he brings a lot to the team."
