According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Andrei Amador (open in new tab) has terminated his contract with Movistar (open in new tab) and will move to Team Ineos (open in new tab) for the 2020 season.
The Costa Rican's contract was set to run through the end of the 2021 season, but he will instead move to a British team with Giro d'Italia winner Richard Carapas.
The move is the latest development in the battle between the Spanish team, coached by Eusebio Unzué, and "super agent" Giuseppe Accadolo. The Italian manages Carapaz and the departed Nairo Quintana and is well known for his ties to Astana and Ineos.
Amador becomes the third Acquadro client to break his contract with his current team to move to Ineos: in 2017, Egan Bernal signed amicably with Androni Giocattoli Sidermec and Ivan Sosa after a contract dispute with Trek Segafredo, He moved to Ineos last summer.
Movistar announced a contract extension with Amador at the end of the Tour de France in July, and he was part of the support team of Quintana, Mikel Landa, and Alejandro Valverde as the trio finished in the top 10 overall in Paris.
It is not clear what caused the change of heart, but Amador will end his 13-year relationship with Movistar and the Lizardo feeder team with which he began his career in 2007.
"We seem to have become a subsidiary of Ineos," an anonymous Movistar source told Marca newspaper.
Unzo and Acquadro's falling out is said to have stemmed from the Giro in May.
The disagreement then apparently escalated at the Tour de France when, after the 16th stage in Nimes, Acquadro told reporters that Unzier had decided against signing with his client in the future. 'Unzier will suffer,' he said. Unzier will suffer because of it." I have acquired some good young Spanish players that he wants, but they will go elsewhere," he said.
Amador, who was integral to Carapaz's Giro win, will join a number of Akkadro clients at Ineos, including Bernal, Carapaz, Sosa, Michał Kwiatkowski, and Vasil Kiryienka. highlights of the 33-year-old's Movistar days include fourth place at the 2015 Giro d'Italia and a stage win in 2012, and the Clasica Amorebieta in 2018.
