Following the conclusion of the 2019 World Championships in Yorkshire, England, the UCI, the governing body of cycling, and the organizers of the 2022 World Championships in Wollongong, Australia, have announced September 18-25 as the dates for the championships three years later. [The 2020 World Championships will be held in the Swiss cantons of Vaud and Valois, while the 2021 World Championships will be held in the Flanders region of Belgium. Thus, the 2022 World Championships, to be held in Wollongong, New South Wales, 80 km south of Sydney, will be the first to be held outside Europe since the 2016 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
"After five editions in Europe, the UCI Road World Championships will be held in Wollongong, Australia. I am confident that our hosts in New South Wales will put on an event that will be unforgettable for both riders and spectators."
Dean Dara Valle, chair of the Wollongong 2022 Organizing Committee, said, "The 2022 UCI Road World Championships will be the largest event ever to be held in Wollongong. The 2022 UCI Road World Championships will be the biggest event ever for Wollongong.
"We can't wait to showcase Wollongong to the world. Now that the dates are confirmed, visitors and teams can start planning their visits."
New South Wales Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres said, "I am delighted that the countdown is on for the 2022 UCI Road World Championships. This event will attract visitors from far and wide, head in bed, consume in restaurants, bars and boutiques, and its impact will be felt in every home in the region."
