Van Breuten makes rainbow jersey debut at Giro delle Miglia

Annemieke van Vleuten (opens in new tab) (Mitchelton Scott (opens in new tab)) will show off her world champion rainbow jersey at the one-day Giro delle Miglia (opens in new tab) in Italy on Saturday, October 5.

The 36-year-old will lead the Australian team in the race for the first time, a week after her thrilling solo gold medal win in Yorkshire (opens in new tab). The rest of the team will compete in the Bruno Begheri GP on Sunday. Van Vleuten will head to China for the Tour of Guangxi later this month.

"Racing in Emilia on Saturday means a lot to me," Van Vleuten said.

"I'm really looking forward to racing in the rainbow stripes and I'm very proud to wear the colors for Mitchelton Scott.

The Italian one-day race, now in its sixth year, will be held on the same day as the 106-year-old men's race and will end with the climb of San Luca, where the opening stage of this year's Giro d'Italia took place. At only 99 km long, the Giro delle Miglia is shorter than the 104 km that Van Vleuten rode alone in Yorkshire.

"The race is different from the men's, which is higher in elevation, but we both finish in the same San Luca," Van Vleuten explained.

"I know that and I saw it at the Giro d'Italia. I think it suits me, it's a great atmosphere and I'm really looking forward to racing there."

This will be Van Vleuten's first time racing after the World Championships.

The new world champion tends to end his season at the World Championships for a variety of reasons, but a week after his Yorkshire success he can't pass up the chance to race, and perhaps win, the Rainbow Stripes.

"I'm celebrating, but I don't think my legs are ruined and I still have a lot of focus left, so I've already started training again. Last year, after my injury, I couldn't enjoy the world time trial title and ended up on a low.

"The team is strong and (Amanda) Spratt is in incredible shape. I'm happy to race with her again and then we can celebrate the results of the whole season with the whole team at the training camp.
